Nine-Tiered Pagoda: Spatial and Visual Magic ③ “My Poet” exhibition, held by Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Pingshan District and Pingshan Art Museum, opened on December 26th 2020. “My Poet” illustrates the interactions between Mao Yan and Han Dong. In 1997, Mao Yan painted a portrait of Han Dong, which embarked on a journey of interactions between painting and poem as an example of integration of the history of art and literature. Centering on paintings of Mao Yan, and poetry and maxims of Han Dong, the exhibition invites the architect Wang Hui for the presentation of space, and the graphic designer Zhu Sha for the creation of posters and other visual contents.
Architect Wang Hui creates a unique maze of space and time for the integration of poetry with paintings, offering a chance for viewers to appreciate a painting or a poem in an isolated room without any exterior interference.
Since the Labyrinth of Minos in the Greek mythology, maze has been a condition for the convergence of anticipation, fear, luck, agony and ecstasy…making viewers feel a prior agreement, a destined association, and a preexistent romantic connection in their daily life. Kant defined the pure forms for sensible intuition as space and time, with space being the external perception while time the internal one. The sensible existence of any objects is inseparable from this space-time forms.
In other words, what the architect needs to create is an ideal pure form of environment to materialize a connection between artworks and viewers, where the encounter of the two generate a pure sense of anticipating, gaining, identifying, as well as belonging… It is the pure forms of the sensation that facilitate the blending of intuitional experiences. The apperception of self-consciousness helps to turn paintings and poems of otherness into works of ours, thus highlighting the theme ‘My Poet and me’, as viewers will not only see “my poet” therein, but also rediscover themselves.
