The pair houses designed by Le Corbusier for the Jaouls family in Paris represent an atypical Corbu work in direct contrast to his Purist approach before the Second World War, and his expressive manner since 1950s. This atypical case of a neither mechanomorphic nor biomorphic form can be further studied to explore the essential typicality of Corbu, and finally to decode his endeavors for the dialectical rapport between industry and craftsmanship, and the philosophical harmony between the individual and the universal. Hence a comprehensive case study on the Maisons Jaoul will help to reveal the integrity of Corbu. Aside from a brief background introduction, this lecture will focus on the design and construction craft related to this project, in terms of typology, modular, structure, material, color, furniture and details. Moreover, since this building is a private residence not open to the public, the speaker will tell a vivid story about a recent visit invited by the current owner of the building.
